Colour Meanings

What Do the Different Wristband Colours Mean?

Awareness causes, hospital codes and event colours, in one honest list.

The short answer

There is no single answer, because three different worlds use wristband colours in three different ways: awareness campaigns, hospitals, and event organisers. The same red band can mean HIV awareness on the street, an allergy on a ward, and a VIP at a festival. This page keeps the three lists apart, which is the only honest way to answer the question.

  • Awareness colours: what each is most often associated with
  • Hospital colour codes, and why they vary between hospitals
  • Event colour-coding: the organiser decides, the band enforces
  • How to choose and own a colour for your own campaign

Awareness colours

These are conventions, not rules, and several causes share a colour. The associations South Africans meet most: pink for breast cancer awareness, red for HIV and Aids awareness and heart disease, yellow made famous by the Livestrong cancer band, orange for kidney disease and hunger campaigns, purple for epilepsy and Alzheimer's, blue for diabetes and autism awareness, green for mental health and organ donation, and white for peace and anti-violence campaigns. A cause you care about may use something else entirely: check its own materials before you print.

Hospital wristband colours

Hospitals use coloured bands as fast warnings. The pattern used in many hospitals: white or clear for standard patient identification, red for allergies, yellow for fall risk, and pink sometimes marking a restricted or at-risk patient. South African hospital groups set their own schemes, so these vary by facility, and the band's printed text, not its colour, is the authority. Our medical ID bands follow the same principle: the words carry the message, the colour just makes it fast.

Event colours mean whatever the organiser says

At events, colour is access control: one colour per ticket tier, day, age group or crew role. There is no universal code, which is the point; the scheme is printed on the door list, not learned in advance. The practical rules are contrast between tiers, one colour per meaning, and glow bands for anything that must be read after dark.

Choosing a colour for your own campaign

Pick the colour people already associate with your cause if one exists, and own a distinctive one locally if not. We match Pantone references on both the band and the print, so the band, the posters and the T-shirts can carry the same colour. The awareness wristbands page covers the campaign side.

Simple ordering

How it works

Five steps from idea to delivery. We do the fiddly parts.

  1. Tell us what you want

Choose your wristband style, colour, quantity and size — or just describe what you are trying to achieve and let us suggest the right combination.

  2. Send us your design

Upload your logo, artwork or wording. Anything from a print-ready vector file to a rough sketch is a fine starting point.

  3. Approve your artwork

We prepare a digital proof showing how your wristband will look. Nothing is produced until you have approved it.

  4. Production

We raise an invoice, and payment — or a deposit — is requested. Once that is received your wristbands go into production and we confirm your dispatch date.

  5. Delivery

Your finished wristbands are delivered to the address on your order, with tracking where the service provides it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order quantity?

Our minimum order quantity is 250 bands per design. Below that the set-up cost per band becomes uneconomical for you rather than for us. If you need a smaller run, tell us on your quote request and we will let you know what is possible.

How much do custom wristbands cost?

Four things set the price: the finish, the number of colours, the quantity and the delivery destination. The price per band falls steeply as the quantity rises, the minimum run is 250 bands, a 50% deposit is paid on proof approval, and we do not charge VAT. The wristband prices page explains each cost in detail, and a written quotation for your exact order arrives within one working day.

Can you match our corporate colour?

Yes — send us your Pantone reference and we will match the band colour, the print colour or both as closely as silicone allows. Silicone is not paper, so an exact match is not always achievable; we will tell you honestly if a shade is going to move.

Can I have more than one colour on a wristband?

Yes. Segmented bands carry defined blocks of colour, two-tone bands use a different colour inside the band from the outside, and several print colours can be applied to a single band. If you have a specific combination in mind, describe it on your quote request.
